From
our Rabbis!
We welcomed the month of Kislev at YOZMA
with an intensive study weekend in the northern part of
Israel focused on the subject of “Understanding the different
approaches to Faith and Belief in Judaism” Kislev is the
month dedicated to the celebration of light! It comes
at a time when the days are the shortest and the nights
are the longest in the calendar year. The lighting of
the Chanukah candles reminds us of the rededication of
the Temple in Jerusalem and the amazing victory of the
Jewish people over the tyranny of the Syrian - Greek rule.
Light brings a sense of clarity, joy and warmth into our
lives. Light is a universal symbol of hope and faith.

Chanukah
at the YOZMA Preschool
All of the classes are busy with activities and planning
for the Chanuka parties, which is one of year’s highlights.
The children prepare the accessories for the parties by
themselves as well as gifts to bring home. Some classes
made paper mache oil lamps, various types of dreidels,
rain rods, and many different styles of menorahs.
In one of the classes, a child’s grandmother, who is a
potter, was invited to create menorahs out of clay. In
another class, they made menorahs out of discarded pipes.

Chanukah
in the YOZMA-Tali Elementary School, 5770
The central
Chanukah motif in Israeli society is that of renewal of
our national memories. Memories connect us from years
past to the present and for the sale of the future. In
the special Chanukah prayers, we recite: "for the
miracles and the heroism, the praise and the battles that
you performed for our fathers in their time in this season".
The sages knew that without consciously connecting ourselves
to the past, this present celebrations are meaningless
and will slowly become folklore and insignificant.

YOZMA weekend at Kibbutz Hannaton
Over the weekend of November 27-28, eighteen YOZMA families
spent Shabbat together at Kibbutz Hannaton, located
in the north of Israel. The families that came on the
weekend were an eclectic mix of YOZMA members, including
some whose connection to YOZMA is via the nursery school,
some whose children are in the YOZMA-TALI school, some
who are connected through the synagogue and a few families
who had just recently joined YOZMA. This group of children,
parents and grandparents were joined by four counselors
from Telem, the youth movement affiliated with the Israel
Movement for Progressive Judaism, whose role (OF KEY IMPORTANCE
I MIGHT ADD) was to entertain and occupy the attention
of the kids, a job they performed superbly.
