The Project
The Tree-by-Tree Forest began as the personal vision of
Dr. Racelle Weiman - the first director
of C.H.H.E.
(The Center for Holocaust and Humanity Education)
- when she realized that there is no forest in Israel
to commemorate the 1.5 million children who perished in
the Holocaust.
Dr.
Weiman conceived a project, which she named "Tree-by-Tree",
to present the stories of as many of these children as
possible, and commemorate their lives and experience during
the Second World War. She contacted people from around
the globe to donate a tree, and after two years, managed
to collect tens of thousands of dollars from people of
all religions and nationalities.
She
then had to search for a serious partner to realize this
important project and help her find a place for the forest
in an area that was filled with life and with the voices
of children.
Impressed
by Dr. Weiman's vision, YOZMA Community, led by Rabbi
Kinneret Shiryon and Executive Director Yossi
Aud, decided to take the establishment of the
Children's Forest upon themselves, in cooperation with
Keren Kayemeth LeIsrael and other organizations. Situated
in the City of Modi'in, and benefiting all the residents
of the area, the Children's Forest will become an educational
and cultural park, vibrant and full of life, as it describes
and remembers the lives and day to day activities of children
from the Holocaust generation, through the generation
of the founders of the State – up until the children of
Modi'in today.
Implementation:
- Planting
of trees in the Children's Tree-by-Tree Forest
- Planning
and construction of paths in the forest to bring to
life some of the stories of these "lost" children
- Building
a state-of-the-art children's playground, including
special facilities for disabled children
- Commissioning
and installing a memorial monument
-
Establishing an interactive internet site
The
Children's Forest will become a year-round educational
project, run by YOZMA's Education Department together
with the Education Department of the Modi'in Municipality,
in cooperation with principals of the various schools
in Modi'in.
On the eve of Tu B'Shvat, Friday February 2nd
at 10:30 a.m., we will inaugurate the Children's Forest
and celebrate the occasion with a ceremony that will include
the planting of the first trees in the Tree-by-Tree Forest.
